The Red Yao are renowned for their tradition of wearing red clothing. Red Yao women excel at embroidery and have customs and secrets for growing and caring for their hair. They usually keep their hair tied up in a bun and do not allow others to see it. They traditionally cut their hair only once at a coming-of-age ceremony at age 18.

The Red Yao are dog people, one might say. Their folklore tells of a dog who delivered grain and seed to them while fleeing from disaster. Eating dog is forbidden in their villages, so anyone who has done so in another town must wash their mouth out and come home through a side or backdoor to avoid courting disaster. During their Clothes Hanging Festival, the Red Yao will have a “Raise the Golden Dog” parade. Around the village, they chant “Revered Golden Dog, thank you for bestowing favor on us. May your posterity rule! Bring gifts from the God of Wealth! Bring peace for a good year!”
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heaven. James 1:17
