Praising in Petition

“My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.” -Psalm 71:15

David is singing and praying for help. He longs for God to be near and remedy his situation. His posture is one that we can hope to have. He hopes continually and will praise all the more. He will use his words to tell of God and his unending kindness. Come what may, he will praise.

David had a knowledge of God's care that was life-defining. It drove him to worship and invite others into worship. In Christ, we can have this same knowledge and the same Gospel-drive to worship. We can recount the deeds of salvation — being brought out of darkness and into relationship with the Creator, a relationship we could never deserve.

We can also not only petition for God's nearness but know it in Christ. This is our Savior who promised to never leave us nor forsake us. By his Spirit, we have someone who sticks closer than a brother. God dwells in and among us. He is our help, provision, and deliverance.

David's life posture can be yours today in Christ. Like David, we can pray, “In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress” (Psalm 71:1-3).

Jesus takes our shame. Jesus rescues us. Jesus hears our prayers. Jesus is our refuge and rock. In Jesus, we can continually come to God. Let's live this way today, with worship on our lips.
