The Peace of Christmas: A Reflection on Psalm 110

In the midst of the darkness of war, a remarkable event occurred during World War I – the Christmas Truce of 1914. Soldiers from opposing sides crossed trenches to exchange greetings, share food, and even engage in joint activities like soccer. This story serves as a poignant illustration of the best of humanity shining through in the midst of the worst.

In the sermon on Psalm 110, we saw parallels between this historical truce and the peace that Jesus brings, illuminating the Advent season. While temporary truces are nostalgic, what humanity truly craves is a lasting, perfect, and harmonious peace – a remaking of the world where reconciliation between all creation and its Creator is central.

Psalm 110, the most quoted psalm in the New Testament, reveals a king who is also a priest. At its core is verse 4, declaring Jesus as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. This unique combination of kingly and priestly roles sets Jesus apart, offering a future-oriented hope for a king like none before.

The sermon emphasizes that Jesus, our Priest of Peace, fulfills the role of Melchizedek, the king who brings bread and wine, signifying spiritual significance. Unlike mere earthly leaders, Jesus mediates between God and His people, bringing a peace that goes beyond the cessation of hostilities.

Addressing the reality of the fall and our perpetual rejection of God, the sermon cites biblical passages highlighting the separation caused by sin. Jesus, as the perfect Priest, came to bridge this cosmic gap, offering himself to bring peace between humanity and God.

Drawing from Hebrews and Romans, the sermon underscores that only Jesus can provide salvation and peace. He is the One to whom Yahweh swears an oath, the guarantor of a better covenant, offering eternal salvation to those who draw near to God through Him.

The war is over, and Jesus has died and risen for new life, interceding for us. The peace He brings is the light of Christmas, a blessing to carry us through and share with others until His return to judge the nations. This peace, the very essence of Advent, is the light for which angels sing.
