“And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt-offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, "The LORD will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided." -Genesis 22:13–14
Abraham, the great man of faith, in obedience brings his son, the one God promised, to a mountain to sacrifice him to the promise-maker. But God is telling a grander story, and he saves the child and provides another sacrifice in his place.
That ram in the thicket is provision, and it's a pointer. It points to God's ultimate provision of his Son to die (on a tree) the death we deserved, and to cover the sins of the world. No matter what lack we face today, this provision is worth rejoicing over.
You no longer have to climb the holy hill under your strength and become or find a perfect sacrifice. One has been provided for you. In that provision, you have fullness of life and eternal reward.
Because Jesus is our once-and-for-all sacrifice meeting our spiritual need, we know that he can and does meet our physical needs as well. He is still the Lord who will provide.
From the place of his provision for you in salvation, trust in his provision for your life today.
